As former President Donald Trump finds himself unable to attack his adversaries due to his ongoing court proceedings, his allies have stepped up to the challenge. Among these includes the House Subcommittee on Weaponization of the Federal Government, which held a televised hearing targeted at the New York prosecution.
The Chairman of the committee, Jim Jordan, invited Robert Costello and Jim Trusty, both former attorneys for Trump, to testify. Also invited to the hearing was a controversial figure linked to the ending of DACA and the divisive immigrant separation policy under the Trump administration, who now serves as general counsel for the America First Legal Foundation.
The topic of Michael Cohen, Trump’s former attorney, came into focus in the hearing. Using the opportunity, Costello, who previously worked at the Southern District of New York (SDNY) and maintains a notable relationship within Trumpland, criticized Cohen. He notably brought up allegations of potential misconduct during the Mueller investigation, claiming Cohen was offered a pardon if he remained loyal. This long-standing feud has shaped much of Costello’s attitude towards Cohen.
On the other hand, Cohen disputes any legitimate attorney-client relationship with Costello, arguing that any such privilege was waived when he pled guilty to tax fraud and campaign finance violations in 2018. Cohen insists his waiver has relieved Costello of his anticipated loyalty to his former client, consequently prompting persistent attacks from Costello’s camp.
Costello argued that his confidential communications with Cohen during his tenure were part of a joint defense agreement, which is a standard practice within law. However, his long and detailed critique, which is inseparable from the personal history between the two, leaves one questioning where Costello’s actual loyalties lie.
The hearing was viewed with criticism by the Democrats in the Subcommittee, who deemed the event as an attempt to undermine Cohen’s credibility and potentially influence existing court processes.
