In-House Counsel Compensation Rises 4.4% Despite Decreased Job Hopping in 2024

The salaries of general counsel and other senior in-house attorneys have experienced an uptick, according to a recent in-house compensation report published by executive search firm BarkerGilmore.

Within the legal workforce, in-house counsel saw a rise of 4.4% in their median compensation in 2024 compared with the previous year. Among the different roles, managing counsel witnessed the most significant rise of 3.8%, trailed by general counsel with a 3.2% increase, and senior counsel experiencing a 2.9% hike.

This compensation boost comes after a median salary drop of 3% between 2022 and 2023. BarkerGilmore’s 2024 In-House Counsel Compensation Report remarks about this intriguing rise in legal professionals’ earnings despite the decline in job-switching activities, commonly associated with lucrative pay upgrades.
