Tunisian Lawyers Strike and Protest: United Stand against Government Overreach

In a remarkable display of unity, lawyers across Tunisia took a stance against perceived government overreach by staging a strike and gathering in protest in front of court buildings in the capital city of Tunis. This widespread action brought all court proceedings to a halt, a consequence seldom seen in the country’s judicial history.

The catalyst for this protest was an aggressive raid conducted on the Lawyers’ House in Tunis by masked security forces. Ostensibly executing an arrest warrant for attorney Sonia Dahmani on May 11, the authorities’ violent tactics have elicited widespread condemnation from the legal community.

Reacting to the raid, the National Council of the Bar issued a comprehensive response in the form of a publicly shared statement, outlining seven resolutions:

  1. Condemnation of the attack on the Lawyers’ House, a legally protected institution.
  2. Implementation of a nationwide strike in all courts, commencing on Monday, May 13, 2024.
  3. Organization of a national protest in front of the Palace of Justice in Tunis on Thursday, May 16, 2024.
  4. Boycott of the public prosecution for three days, starting from Tuesday, May 14, 2024.
  5. Press conference to clarify the circumstances surrounding the raid.
  6. Filing of criminal complaints against those responsible for the raid.
  7. Establishment of a Lawyers’ Observatory to document rights violations.
  8. Call for unity and solidarity among lawyers.

The strike began in the capital, as per the plan, but the subsequent protest has been deemed a more impactful action, representing a collective outcry against the current intimidation tactics.

The lawyers’ reaction underscores the magnitude of the situation and their resolve to safeguard the independence and integrity of their profession. As the strike and protests persist, the world is watching for an outcome that will hopefully reestablish the principles of justice and the rule of law.
