Ahead of Pride Month, U.S. Issues Worldwide Caution for LGBTQI+ Travelers

The U.S. State Department recently initiated a “Worldwide Caution” alert, informing U.S. citizens overseas to exercise enhanced caution due to concerns of potential violence against LGBTQI+ persons and events, influenced by terrorism. This alert has been issued ahead of Pride month in June, a period renowned for parades and events that celebrate LGBTQI+ communities.

Tourists are particularly advised to be alert and vigilant in locations frequently visited by the LGBTQI+ community and during Pride celebrations. Moreover, Americans traveling abroad were encouraged to register for the Smart Travel Enrollment Program (STEP), a scheme that facilitates embassies in contacting U.S. citizens in cases of emergency, such as civil rest or natural disasters, and connect them with family and friends.

This warning coincides with the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia, and Transphobia. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken has stated on social media that the U.S. is committed to promoting the safety and dignity of LGBTQ+ individuals as part of its effort to advance national interests.

Earlier in the month, a similar statement was released by the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security, forewarning about the possible targeting and exploitation of large LGBTQIA+ gatherings by foreign terrorist organizations. This statement underlined past attempts that targeted the LGBTQIA+ community, including the tragic Pulse Nightclub shooting in Orlando and various calls to action from ISIS urging followers to launch attacks on LGBTQI+ venues and events.
