Chinese Agriculture Minister Tang Renjian Under Investigation for Violating Discipline and Law

The Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI) of China has announced an investigation into Tang Renjian, China’s Secretary of the Party Leadership Group and Minister of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, on charges of violating discipline and law. Further specific details about the allegations or the nature of the investigation have not been provided.

Renjian, 61, has held numerous positions within the agricultural ministry, the Office of the Central Leading Group for Financial and Economic Affairs, and the Party Committee and Government of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. He has been in charge of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs since December 2020. Interestingly, just three days prior to the investigation’s announcement, Renjian attended the National Rural Talent Work Conference held in Xianyang, Shaanxi.

The severity and nature of the penalties Renjian may face hinges on the findings of the disciplinary review and investigatory proceedings. The Chinese Communist Party’s Regulations on Disciplinary Actions forms the backbone of party discipline and stipulates a range of violations by party members, which includes misuse of authority, embezzlement, and infractions against rules on integrity and self-discipline. In the event the alleged misconduct qualifies as criminal, pertinent provisions of the Criminal Law, like Article 383 condemning embezzlement or Article 397 outlining penalties for abuse of power, could be invoked.
