Man Shot by French Police While Attempting to Set Synagogue Ablaze in Alleged Anti-Semitic Attack

In a shocking set of events, French law enforcement recently intervened in what appears to have been an attempt at an anti-Semitic attack. A man, whose identity remains undisclosed, was shot dead by the French police after he tried to set fire to a synagogue.

The terrifying act took place when the unidentified individual scaled a trash bin in an attempt to gain access to the synagogue through the first floor. According to Mayor of Rouen Nicolas Mayer-Rossignol, who shared details about the incident, and as described by eyewitnesses, an object identified as a molotov cocktail was thrown at the building in an attempt to start a fire.

Ultimately, the fire remained under control. However, not only did the individual attempt to incite arson, but he also tried to assault a law enforcement officer on site. This confrontation resulted in the suspect being shot.

Mayor Nicolas extended support towards the Jewish community following the disturbing event, emphasizing that it wasn’t an attack on the Jewish community alone, but rather, on the community as a whole. By extension, he interpreted it as an attack against France and underscored that anti-Semitism holds no place in their republic.

Following the incident, Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin announced plans to honor the brave actions of the police officers and firefighters who worked commendably to control the situation. Natacha Ben Haim, the President of the Jewish Community in Rouen, responded to the attack, describing it as a catastrophic event.

It is essential to remember that such instances of anti-Semitic attacks are not exclusive to France and represent a rising global issue. UNESCO and the Permanent Delegation of the EU to UNESCO organized a discussion in November of last year to highlight education’s key role to combat the intensifying global issue of anti-Semitism.
