In a sorrowful event, gunmen killed an Afghan citizen and three Spanish tourists in Bamyan province, central Afghanistan as per an announcement made by the Taliban’s Ministry of Interior Affairs. The attack also resulted in injury to four foreign nationals and three Afghans, confirmed by the ministry spokesman Abdul Mateen Qani.
The Taliban government expressed its condemnation of the attack. Qani expressed heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims, assuring that every effort would be made to find and punish the criminals. As of writing, four suspects have been arrested, however no group has as yet taken responsibility.
Further information was provided by Spain’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs who confirmed that the deceased foreigners were indeed Spanish citizens. This was followed by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez who in a public statement, expressed his condolences and assured consular support for those who have been affected.
Bamyan, the locale of the attack, is a major tourist destination. Home to a UNESCO World Heritage Site as well as the remnants of two gigantic Buddha statues, which were destroyed by the Taliban in 2001, the region has recently started to see a modest increase in tourism following the Taliban’s return to control in 2021.
The European Union also condemned the attack and extended their thoughts and support to the victims’ families and the injured. These victims included citizens from Spain, Lithuania, Norway, and Australia. As per various medical sources, all patients are currently stable, while the Afghan national has been critically injured.
It is important to note that despite an overall improvement in terms of security, certain armed groups, including ISIL, persist as active threats in Afghanistan. In an attack in 2022 which was claimed by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), several Chinese citizens were injured at a hotel in Kabul. Incidents such as these highlight the ongoing danger in the region.
