Senate Confirms Aframe, Rendering First Circuit Solely Democratic-Appointed

On Monday, the Senate gave its confirmation to the appointment of federal prosecutor Seth Aframe to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit, a significant development that renders the court the sole federal appeals court with all its active judges appointed by a single party’s presidents.

Aframe, an Assistant U.S. Attorney in New Hampshire, earned his seat by a 49-40 vote. This makes him the fourth judge President Joe Biden has appointed to this influential court.

Aframe fills a void left by Judge Jeffrey Howard who assumed senior status in March 2022. Notably, Howard was the last remaining Republican-appointed judge on the court at the time of his transition.
