For legal professionals searching for interesting diversions during the intervals between their billable hours, a new game is on the horizon. Meet Couch Potato Salad – a daily word puzzle game conceived by Zack Gross, an NYU Law graduate and former O’Melveny associate.
Gross’ invention prompts players to describe an AI-generated image through the use of two familiar phrases, connected by a shared word. He suggested that “players have never seen anything like this before”, implying a novel approach to word puzzles. His cultivation of the game over a period of about a year stemmed from a simpler version he played with a friend from law school, which utilized only single-word clues. The modern version of the game, however, leverages the capabilities of DALL-E 3 to create stirring images, which Gross believed would significantly boost the game’s appeal.
When questioned about the proficiency of lawyers at Couch Potato Salad, Gross readily confirmed their adeptness. He stressed that the game’s essence resides in recognizing how words change meanings, depending on their context—a trait that lawyers are trained to discern. Currently, Gross’s focus lies in magnifying the game’s user base. He has also begun work on a physical counterpart of the game for in-person gameplay and a children’s edition.
