Germany Grapples With Record Surge in Politically Motivated Crimes in 2023

report,

A total of 60,028 politically driven crimes were recorded last year, signifying a minor overall increase of 1.89 percent. The report detailed a concerning increase in hate crimes across the board – anti-Semitic hate crimes rose by a staggering 96 percent, Islamophobic incidents saw an increase of 140 percent. An uptick was equally observed in instances of anti-queer, misogynistic, and racist violence. Anti-Semitic crimes, the report notices, have seen a strong uptick following the commencement of the Israel-Hamas war starting October 7.

The Interior Minister of Germany, Nancy Faeser, emphasized that German democracy was feeling “under pressure” in the face of these political offenses aimed at intimidating and assaulting political activists and law enforcers. This warning came forth in an official
statement.

In an effort to stem this worrisome trend, the Federal Cabinet has introduced a new strategy to reinforce democracy and combat extremism. Additionally, it has put forward a draft amendment to the Federal Reporting Act to prevent traceability of residential addresses of private citizens. The objective of such changes is to enhance protection for individuals becoming targets due to their political engagement.

Already in 2024, three German politicians and campaign workers have faced violent attacks embryonic of the upcoming European Parliament elections.
