Addressing the Overlooked Mental Health of Senior Lawyers and Partners

Recent observations and discussions about lawyer wellbeing, though crucially important, often overlook a key group, senior attorneys or partners. Reports confirm that legal professionals, on the whole, are more prone to issues such as depression, anxiety, substance abuse disorders, and even suicide, compared to the general public. However, strategies implemented by law firms to address these concerns are typically targeted towards staff and junior lawyers, neglecting the mental wellbeing of senior practitioners.

Ironically the stress-related challenges experienced by partners can often trickle down and contribute to the pressures experienced by non-partners within their firms. Hence, there is a growing need for greater attention to the mental health of partners. This acknowledgment is somewhat marred as partners often operate under the assumption that they are the ones extending help, rather than those who might require it, especially where mental health is considered.
