Former United States President Donald Trump’s recent attempt to impose sanctions on New York prosecutors was unsuccessful, marking yet another downturn in his legal struggles. Justice Juan Merchan presiding over the false business records case in New York once again ruled against Trump, adding to his series of legal setbacks in court as noted previously.
The order, easily accessible here, denies Trump’s request for sanctions against the District Attorney’s Office. The ruling was anticipated by many, considering that Justice Merchan announced it more than eight weeks ago, on March 25th.
Trump’s legal team, led by attorney Todd Blanche, sought sanctions amid allegations of “improper and unethical” discovery violations. They made these claims after the Justice Department’s late production of evidence pertaining to Michael Cohen. They further objected to the manner in which the prosecution was conducted, accusing the team of selectively collecting materials to strengthen their case while neglecting others as detailed here.
In response to these allegations, the District Attorney’s office issued a counterstatement asserting their compliance with all dutiful obligations. They clarified that they had obtained an ex parte sharing order from a federal court on January 25, 2023 and had duly turned over all production to the defense in a timely manner.
