In a tragic turn of events, three members of a US organization, Missions in Haiti, were shot and killed by a gang in Haiti, the organization announced on Friday. Among the victims were a married couple, Davy and Natalie Lloyd, as well as the Mission director, Jude Montis. This horrific incident took place as the victims were leaving a church in Port-au-Prince.
The Missions in Haiti group, which is based in Oklahoma, has been assisting Haitian children for more than two decades, run by the parents of Davy Lloyd. According to reports, after leaving a youth event at their local church, the three victims were ambushed by an armed gang. In a desperate bid to protect themselves, Davy, Natalie, and Jude sought refuge in an onsite building which was subsequently riddled with gunfire by the gang members. Further attempts to negotiate a safe evasion or seek help from authorities were unsuccessful.
The US Department of State press statement issued by Matthew Miller emphasizes the urgency of tackling the security situation in Haiti, quoting him: “Unfortunately, this serves as a reminder that the security situation in Haiti cannot wait – too many innocent lives are being lost.”
Haiti is currently facing a severe humanitarian crisis and political instability with an estimated 150-200 armed gangs operating nationwide. The capital city Port-au-Prince has divided into two rival coalitions led by Gabriel Jean Pierre and Jimmy Chérizier. These factions have successfully taken control over strategic areas, roads, ports, and borders.
In response to the escalating gang violence in Haiti, the UN Security Council authorized a Multinational Security Support Mission for Haiti in October 2023 through its Resolution 2699. The mission, which faces several legal challenges in Kenyan courts, is designed to support Haiti’s National Police in combating gang violence and working towards restoring security.
The incident involving the murder of three missionaries highlights the dire circumstances currently enveloping Haiti and underscores the immediate needs for international assistance and attention.
