Italy Boosts Palestinian Aid with €35 Million Support Package for Food Security and Refugee Assistance

In a recent development, Italy has committed to providing an additional support package of 35 million euros to Palestine. In a meeting with the Palestinian Prime Minister, the Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs detailed how the aid package will primarily fund ‘Food for Gaza’ and the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).

The majority of the aid package will support ‘Food for Gaza’, with a commitment of 30 million euros from Antonio Tajani, the Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs. An increase from the previous allocation of 20 million euros, this commitment was announced in a press release from the Italian Government in collaboration with the UN’s World Food Program, the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation, and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC). The mission of these organizations is to ensure food security in the Gaza Strip, thereby alleviating the suffering of its population.

Tajani also committed 5 million euros to the UNRWA. However, as per the press release, these funds will be distributed between different regions; specifically, the West Bank, and a collective group consisting of Syria, Lebanon, and Jordan.

This significant commitment to aid from Italy follows a recent allegation by Israel that linked UNRWA to Hamas attacks and compelled a temporary ceasing of fund allocation from several countries, including the US. The incident prompted the UN to conduct an internal review which stated that the UNRWA continues to maintain mechanisms of acceptable neutrality and is committed to improving these further. Numerous member states have resumed their funding in light of these findings.

In summary, this new financial commitment by the Italian government represents a significant contribution to Palestine’s ongoing humanitarian support and indicates a willingness to collaboratively aid in mitigating the region’s challenges.
