U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan of the Southern District of New York on Tuesday handed down a seven and a half year prison sentence to Ryan Salame, a former executive at the now-defunct cryptocurrency exchange FTX. Salame’s sentencing is tied to his involvement in two illegal schemes with FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried.
In this case, prosecutors had recommended a sentence within the range of five to seven years. Salame’s defense attorneys, Jason Linder and Gina Parlovecchio of Mayer Brown, contended that a substantially lighter sentence of 18 months would have been more appropriate. Despite these recommendations, Judge Kaplan opted for a sentence that exceeded the prosecutorial request.
