Pakistan Police Book 500 Over Mob Violence Against Christian Man Accused of Quran Desecration

In a significant development, police in Sargodha, Pakistan, have filed a first information report against 500 individuals for alleged participation in mob violence against a Christian man accused of desecrating the Quran. The incident occurred on Saturday in Sargodha’s Mujahid Colony, as reported by Pakistan Today.

The charges against those implicated invoke sections 7 and 11WW of the Anti-Terrorism Act 1997, which covers acts of terrorism and dissemination of materials inciting hatred. Additionally, sections 324, 186, 353, 436, 440, and 149 of the Pakistan Penal Code are cited. These sections encompass crimes ranging from obstruction of public servants to mischief by fire and participation in unlawful assemblies.

According to the police report, the mob, armed with stones and other weapons, attempted to forcibly enter the Christian man’s residence before setting it on fire by igniting a nearby shoe factory and adjacent electricity supplies. The man was severely injured during the police intervention which extricated him. Other Christian families in the area faced attacks as well.

District Police Officer Assad Malhi mentioned that additional police units have been deployed in Sargodha to ensure the safety of Christian residents. Moreover, the Punjab police have tightened security measures at Christian churches, as confirmed on their official X account.

This is not the first occurrence of mob violence targeting the Christian community in Pakistan. In August 2023, Human Rights Watch called upon Pakistani authorities to protect religious minorities after a similar attack on a Christian settlement. At that time, then-Prime Minister Anwaar ul Haq Kakar emphasized on X that strong actions would be taken against those violating laws and targeting minorities, urging law enforcement to arrest and prosecute the perpetrators.
