In a significant move within the telecommunications sector, T-Mobile US Inc., currently the second-largest mobile carrier in the United States, has entered into an agreement to acquire the wireless operations and select spectrum assets of US Cellular Corp. The transaction is valued at approximately $2.4 billion.
The comprehensive deal entails not only the acquisition of US Cellular’s wireless customers but also incorporates their retail stores and about 30% of its spectrum assets. T-Mobile has outlined that it will cover the purchase with a combination of cash and up to $2 billion in assumed debt, totaling an expenditure of $4.4 billion.
This strategic acquisition is anticipated to complete by mid-2025, contingent upon receiving the mandatory regulatory approvals. This latest expansion effort follows a period of robust growth for T-Mobile, which has outpaced its industry counterparts largely due to its early and strategic investments in 5G technology. This edge has allowed the company to surpass quarterly earnings expectations consistently.
Following the announcement, T-Mobile’s stock experienced a modest increase, climbing 1.4% to $168.32 as of mid-morning trading in New York.
