Chief Justice Roberts Declines Senate Meeting on Supreme Court Ethics, Cites Separation of Powers Concerns

Chief Justice John Roberts Jr. has once again declined an invitation from Senate Democrats to discuss the Supreme Court’s ethics standards. In a letter released Thursday, Roberts emphasized concerns regarding the separation of powers and underscored the necessity of maintaining judicial independence. This marked the second consecutive year that Roberts has refused such a meeting with the Senate Judiciary Committee. The request from lawmakers followed reports about controversial flags displayed outside the private residences of Justice Samuel Alito Jr. Roberts stated in his letter, “Separation of powers concerns and the importance of preserving judicial independence counsel against such appearances” (link).
