Federal Court Nears Preliminary Approval of Orrick’s $8 Million Data Breach Settlement

An $8 million settlement to resolve a class action lawsuit stemming from a data breach at Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP is on the verge of receiving preliminary approval from the federal district court. The breach affected approximately 461,100 individuals. Judge Susan Illston has taken the consolidated class’ unopposed motion for the proposed settlement under consideration and indicated her intent to give the agreement an initial green light during a virtual hearing held in the US District Court for the Northern District of California.

“In general, my preliminary view is to approve what you’ve suggested,” Judge Illston remarked at the hearing. The settlement includes compensation to named plaintiffs, which will be subject to scrutiny by the Ninth Circuit.

The specifics of the breach, including how hackers successfully accessed Orrick’s data, underline the ongoing vulnerabilities law firms face regarding data security. This case serves as a reminder of the increasing legal implications tied to cybersecurity breaches. To read more in-depth, visit the Bloomberg Law article.
