Path to Partnership for Attorneys of Color: Survey Reveals Persistent Goals Amid Challenges

The journey to partnership for attorneys of color at large law firms is fraught with complexities but remains a primary career objective, according to the 2024 Diversity Survey by Leopard Solutions in collaboration with Above the Law. The survey, which included responses from over 600 diverse lawyers, sheds light on both the aspirations and the challenges faced by these professionals.

While making partner remains the goal for a significant majority—64% upon joining a top 200 law firm, with 65% maintaining this ambition after joining—the pathway is often strewn with obstacles. Despite these challenges, including instances of bias and marginalization, a noteworthy 70% of respondents believe they see a clear path to partnership at their current firms.

Interestingly, more than 60% of those surveyed envision themselves either as partners or on track to partnership within the next five years, whether at their current firm or another. This data underscores a persistent optimism and determination among diverse attorneys to break through the barriers that have traditionally hindered their advancement.

These findings highlight the significant imbalance that still exists within the legal industry when it comes to diversity at the highest levels. To delve deeper into these insights and explore the experiences of diverse attorneys on the ground, a dedicated webinar titled “Diversity in Law: Attorneys from Underrepresented Backgrounds Detail Experiences on the Ground at BigLaw” will be held on June 6 at 12 p.m. ET. Interested individuals can register here for the event.
