Maldives Bans Israeli Passports Amid Rising Tensions Over Gaza Conflict

The Maldivian government has announced the imposition of a ban on all Israeli passports, as per a statement from the President’s official press office. This decision follows the escalating public outrage over attacks by Israeli forces on Gaza. President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu expressed his strong condemnation of the “deadly attacks by Israeli forces on the tent camp in Rafah” via X (formerly Twitter), advocating for an immediate ceasefire to ensure humanitarian access and halt the violence.

The decision, shared by Muizzu’s office on Sunday, involves amending necessary laws to prevent Israeli passport holders from entering the country and establishing a Cabinet subcommittee to supervise these efforts. The announcement was made through the Maldivian Minister of Homeland Security and Technology. The cabinet will include the Minister of Homeland Security and Technology, the Islamic Minister, the Attorney General, the Minister of Economic Development and Trade, the Minister of Tourism, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, according to SunOnline.

The cabinet also discussed areas in Palestine requiring Maldivian support and announced a campaign for nationwide rallies under the slogan “Maldivians in solidarity with Palestine” (originally “Faladheenaa Eku Dhiveheen”). The Maldivian government has voiced its intention to work with other Muslim nations to find a resolution to the Palestinian conflict.

Home Minister Ali Ihusan stated that the law is expected to be implemented “as soon as possible.” The parliamentary assembly of the Maldives is scheduled to have a second sitting on the issue on Monday. The ruling party, the People’s National Congress (PNC), which holds a supermajority in parliament, is set to vote on the matter to ensure the legal amendments for the ban on Israeli passports are enacted.

Muizzu’s office indicated that future decisions regarding the Palestine-Israel conflict will be made by the specially formed cabinet while a presidential fundraising campaign is ongoing to “assist our brothers and sisters in Palestine.”
