Last September, two litigation-focused Canadian legal technology companies, CiteRight and Jurisage, announced their merger with the aim of combining CiteRight’s litigation drafting program with Jurisage’s AI technology. Now, the first fruit of that merger has been unveiled: CiteRight’s AI-powered tool, AI Insights by Jurisage.
AI Insights is integrated into CiteRight’s existing platform and is designed to assist litigation teams with prompt-free case law summaries and synthesis. According to CiteRight’s CEO, Aaron Wenner, AI Insights leverages Jurisage’s existing technology, which is already in use by several Canadian law firms and has been selected by the Incorporated Council of Law Reporting for England and Wales (ICLR) for AI-generated case law summaries.
Wenner emphasized three main features of this tool during a preview demonstration:
- Focus on a Specific Use Case: AI Insights is designed to help litigators summarize cases they already know rather than generating entirely new arguments.
- No Chatbots: The tool uses drop-down menus instead of chatbots, simplifying user interaction.
- No Extra Cost: The tool is available at no additional cost to existing CiteRight customers.
AI Insights aims to support investigations into case law by providing summaries in multiple formats such as legal conclusions, facts, brief facts, and structured highlights. This capability enables litigators to efficiently prepare for tasks like oral arguments, where revisiting previously cited cases becomes a necessity.
CiteRight’s core product remains its research-management software, which allows users to organize and cite legal cases directly within Microsoft Word. What AI Insights adds is the capacity to generate high-quality summaries rapidly, easing the workflow for knowledge management professionals and litigators alike.
Wenner believes that such AI-driven capabilities will help law firms better access and extract value from their documents, viewing this innovation as addressing both a knowledge management challenge and a user experience problem. He assured that future enhancements would be made in collaboration with their customers.
Currently, CiteRight and AI Insights are tailored exclusively for Canadian case law, but Wenner has indicated a potential expansion to the U.S. in the future.
