Demand for Junior Lawyers in Canada Remains Strong with Litigation Leading Practice Areas

Demand for junior lawyers in Canada remains stable, with litigation being the most in-demand practice area, according to recruiters and lawyers.

It is the time of year when firms across the country start making associate job offers for the law students who have been articling or training with the firm over the last 10 to 12 months. Despite some social media reports to the contrary, hirebacks of first-year associates at Canadian law firms remain strong and in line with recent years, recruiters and firms say.

Most of the large firms have hired back more than 70% of their articling students this year, which is on track or better than 2023, according to Precedent magazine, which has been tracking hirebacks in the Toronto market.
