McDonald’s has lost its right to call its chicken sandwiches a “Big Mac” in the European Union after a ruling by the EU’s second-highest court. This decision comes as part of a long-standing dispute with Irish fast-food chain Supermac’s.
The Luxembourg-based EU General Court found that McDonald’s Big Mac trademark did not apply to chicken products and certain fast-food services. Supermac’s, a Galway-based company intent on expanding within continental Europe, described the case as “trademark bullying” and lauded the court’s decision as a significant victory for small businesses around the world.
