In a troubling incident from Michigan, a young attorney has been charged with attempted home invasion and felony firearm possession. The suspect, Levi T. Smith, 34, a 2015 law school graduate, and most recently an employee at a small personal injury law firm, reportedly attempted to break into the home of his former coworker, who was also a past love interest, on June 1. The crime took place in the middle of the night, resulting in a chaotic series of events.
According to law enforcement reports, the victim woke up to find Smith attempting to enter her home through a side door. She quickly triggered the panic alarm and managed to capture footage of Smith via her Ring doorbell as he was fleeing the scene. Upon his capture, police found Smith carrying a backpack filled with various ominous items, including a loaded handgun, a large knife, handcuffs, rope, masks, a hammer, a crowbar, duct tape, and latex gloves.
Karen McDonald, the local prosecutor, praised the victim’s rapid response. “Without the victim’s call to 911 and the work of the Royal Oak Police, this situation could have been far worse,” McDonald stated. Royal Oak Police Chief Michael Moore echoed her sentiments, noting the importance of quick action by the victim to avert further danger.
Smith exhibited suicidal tendencies while in police custody and was subsequently arraigned. During his hearing, when asked if he planned on securing legal representation, he confidently asserted, “One hundred percent positive. I’m a lawyer myself,” as reported by Fox 2 Detroit. The charges he faces could lead to up to seven years of imprisonment. His bond has been set at $25,000, an amount he claimed he could not afford. Smith is scheduled for another court appearance on June 14.
