The 2024 Diversity Survey, conducted by Leopard Solutions, in collaboration with Above the Law, provides a comprehensive look at the experiences of diverse attorneys within large law firms. A substantial number of lawyers—over 600—contributed their insights, shedding light on the aspirations and challenges faced by attorneys of color in the corporate legal landscape.
Among the key findings, a striking majority (64%) of respondents indicated that their primary objective upon joining a top 200 law firm was to achieve partnership. This ambition remained consistent, with 65% reporting that their goals had not shifted since their initial entry into the firm. For a detailed breakdown of these statistics, you can refer to the full survey results.
Looking ahead, more than 60% of respondents envisioned themselves being a partner or progressing towards partnership within the next five years, either at their current firm (50%) or another law firm (13%). Despite facing instances of bias and marginalization, an encouraging 70% of attorneys of color surveyed felt optimistic about their path to partnership at their current firm.
These findings suggest a persistent drive and a hopeful outlook amongst diverse attorneys within the legal industry, although systemic challenges remain. For further insights into the professional journeys and aspirations of these attorneys, the study will be discussed in an upcoming webinar titled Diversity in Law: Attorneys from Underrepresented Backgrounds Detail Experiences on the Ground at BigLaw on June 6.
