Norton Rose Fulbright Aims to Expand U.S. Lawyer Headcount to 1,000 by 2025

In an increasingly competitive legal landscape, Norton Rose Fulbright, which recorded a gross revenue of $2.26 billion in 2023, has set an ambitious target to expand its U.S. lawyer headcount from 850 to 1,000 by the end of 2025. As noted by Jeff Cody, the U.S. managing partner, the firm aims to achieve this growth primarily through lateral partner and group hires rather than mergers. The firm seeks to leverage its scale to outperform smaller peers and enhance revenue without compromising productivity.

In an interview with Bloomberg Law, Cody emphasized that lawyer growth drives revenue, a perspective aligned with recent industry trends where the largest law firms have fared better. “It’s growing lawyers, partners, and growing the firm,” Cody said. “If we’re successful, we’ll be successful at growing revenue.”

Norton Rose has shown robust financial performance, with its global revenue increasing by over 8% last year and U.S. offices boosting revenue by 13%. The firm aims to continue this trend by enhancing productivity and headcount. Cody noted that early 2024 figures already surpass the previous year’s records, attributing the success to heightened demand and increased timekeeper productivity. “We’ve added timekeepers but our productivity is up,” Cody told Bloomberg. “It is just demand. We’re busy.”

The firm’s strategy and dedication to growth reflect its commitment to maintaining competitiveness and meeting rising client demands. For a more in-depth analysis, see the coverage in Bloomberg Law.
