In a recent press conference, Switzerland’s government revealed that authorities have detected cyberattacks in the lead-up to the Summit on Peace in Ukraine, scheduled for 15-16 June in Bürgenstock, Canton of Nidwalden. President of the Swiss Confederation Viola Amherd noted that although there have been “a couple of disturbances and cyberattacks,” further details could not be disclosed at this time. She emphasized that organizing an international conference of this magnitude inherently comes with various risks, for which the government is well-prepared.
Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis highlighted a significant increase in cyberattacks and misinformation campaigns over recent weeks, although no specific perpetrators were identified. Cassis pointed out that such actions are often intended to disrupt the effective conduct of such high-level engagements.
The Summit on Peace in Ukraine is a Swiss initiative aimed at fostering lasting peace in Ukraine, with over 160 delegations from 90 countries expected to participate. The discussions will focus on three global concerns: nuclear safety, freedom of navigation and food security, and humanitarian aspects.
Amnesty International has urged the global community to address human rights issues, justice for victims, and the involvement of civil society groups in Ukraine. Although NGOs will not be participating in this summit, the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs has assured that civil society organizations will play a role in future stages of the peace process.
The summit is the latest in a series of international efforts to address the Ukraine-Russia conflict. Another key event, the URC 2024, organized by Germany, will be held in Berlin on June 11-12 to mobilize global support for Ukraine’s reconstruction and modernization. This initiative continues the work of the Ukraine Recovery Conference URC2022, previously co-organized by Switzerland.
