Clarence Thomas Faces Renewed Scrutiny Over Undisclosed Luxury Travel Funded by GOP Megadonor

Recent disclosures have revealed that Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas took several additional free trips on private planes, courtesy of Republican megadonor Harlan Crow, that he has yet to disclose. This emerged as part of ongoing investigations by the Senate Judiciary Committee, which reached a deal with Crow to turn over years of pertinent documents. Crow and his legal team at Gibson Dunn had flirted with contempt of Congress charges before cooperating with the committee (Above the Law).

Thomas had previously garnered attention for receiving close to $6 million in gifts or suspected gifts, as documented by Fix the Court. The revelations prompted concerns about ethical violations significantly impacting the Supreme Court’s reputation (Above the Law).

The fact that these additional trips were not included in previous disclosures has further complicated Thomas’ situation. Critics argue that Thomas should have proactively verified the extent of his undisclosed benefits, considering the Senate’s interest in Crow’s records. The precedent of former Justice Abe Fortas resigning for accepting far smaller financial benefits only underscores the severity of Thomas’s actions.
