In a significant development ahead of Venezuela’s July presidential elections, opposition parties have reported the arbitrary detention of three activists by the government. The activists, identified as Juan Carlos Rivas, Luis López, and Juan Iriarte, were allegedly detained on Friday, and their whereabouts remained unknown for more than 20 hours, as per the opposition party Vente’s statement on X (formerly Twitter).
Subsequently, the activists were presented before Venezuelan courts and accused of incitement to hatred, according to opposition party Voluntad Popular’s announcement. Despite having private legal representation, the accused were reportedly assigned public defense lawyers, a move criticized by the opposition as part of a broader campaign of intimidation by President Nicolás Maduro’s administration.
Voluntad Popular has condemned the detentions, asserting that they reflect a systematic effort by the Maduro government to target and intimidate members of the opposition. “The regime of Nicolás Maduro attacks again against activists of the Venezuelan democratic cause, whom it baselessly intends to involve in criminal actions as a measure of intimidation,” the party stated.
In a separate post on X, Voluntad Popular also emphasized the ongoing persecution faced by activists, noting that the electoral path should not result in such punitive actions. Opposition leader Maria Corina Machado has also been vocal about the detentions, describing them as “political persecution”. In recent months, Machado has faced her own challenges, including being banned from campaigning by President Maduro.
Machado has continued to support efforts for democratic change, endorsing presidential candidate Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia of the Plataforma Unitaria Democratia party. She has also claimed that the government has shut down businesses and hotels that the opposition has frequented. Since January, at least 13 activists have reportedly been arbitrarily detained, an issue highlighted again by Machado in her statements.
