The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has found reason to believe that TikTok is violating children’s privacy rights, referring the matter to the Department of Justice’s Civil Division. The new allegations arise five years after TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, paid $5.7 million to settle a previous FTC children’s privacy probe. The FTC’s concerns were discovered during a compliance review of Musical.ly, a platform ByteDance acquired in 2017 and subsequently merged into TikTok.
