A record number of politically motivated crimes occurred in Germany in 2023, according to a report published by the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (Bundesverfassungsschutz). The report, released on Tuesday, highlights a nearly 2 percent increase in such crimes from the previous year, marking the highest level since monitoring began over two decades ago.
The report distinguishes between violent and non-violent offenses, such as property damage, incitement to hatred, and coercion. Notably, right-wing politically motivated crimes surged by 23 percent to 28,945 cases, including 1,270 violent incidents. The report attributes this increase to extremist groups exploiting global conflicts, such as those in Gaza and Ukraine, to fuel anti-Islamic and xenophobic sentiments. This disturbing trend is mirrored at the ballot box, where the far-right Alternative for Germany (AFD) achieved significant electoral gains, securing second place nationwide in the European parliamentary elections.
Left-wing crimes also saw an uptick, rising by 11 percent to 7,777 cases, with 916 of these being violent. The report suggests that some left-wing groups are increasingly resorting to violence to undermine climate protest movements. An example of this occurred in March when a group set fire to the power grid of a Tesla factory near Berlin as a protest against the company’s expansion plans. This incident was reported by Deutsche Welle.
Alarmingly, antisemitic crimes skyrocketed from 33 cases in 2022 to 492 in the following year, a sharp increase that correlates with the attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. This surge highlights the polarized environment, with right-wing, left-wing, and Islamist groups increasingly taking extreme and illegal actions, sometimes directed at the state itself. Interior Minister Nancy Faeser emphasized the importance of the rule of law in addressing this issue during a press conference in May when the criminal statistics were first unveiled.
The violence has not been confined to ideologically motivated crimes; political violence has also been directed at individuals. Recently, an AFD candidate was injured in a knife attack, and multiple other politicians were assaulted ahead of the European elections, as reported by JURIST.
The increasing trend of politically motivated crimes in Germany in 2023 underscores the challenging landscape the nation faces in maintaining domestic security and upholding democratic values in a time of global and domestic upheaval.
