Federal Court Upholds $3.8 Million Settlement in Murdaugh Insurance Case Despite Theft

A federal court has upheld a $3.8 million insurance settlement paid by Nautilus Insurance Co., a unit of W.R. Berkley Corp., despite the fact that nearly $3.5 million of it was stolen by Alex Murdaugh. The funds were originally intended for the family of Murdaugh’s deceased housekeeper, Gloria Satterfield, who suffered a fatal injury on Murdaugh’s property.

Murdaugh was sentenced to 40 years in prison in April 2024 for wire and bank fraud, having pled guilty to stealing from clients of his former law firm and from Satterfield’s family. This comes on the heels of a separate sentence in March 2023, in which he received two consecutive life sentences for the murders of his wife and son.

The case has drawn wide attention given the high-profile nature of Murdaugh’s crimes and the subsequent legal proceedings. For more detailed coverage on this development, visit the Bloomberg Law article.
