The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) is a competitive exam required for entrance into medical colleges across India, conducted annually by the National Testing Agency (NTA). This year, approximately 2.4 million students participated in the exam on May 5. Following the release of results, controversy erupted as allegations of rank inflation and unfair practices surfaced. The NTA has defended the results, attributing the high scores to the relative ease of the paper and the large number of candidates taking the exam. Additionally, 1,563 students received compensatory marks due to technical issues at exam centers that affected their test completion time.
The issue further intensified when it was discovered that six students who scored perfect marks took the exam at the same center, and previously underperforming students suddenly achieved top scores. These anomalies have led to calls for an investigation and a possibility of a re-examination.
In response to the allegations, the NTA convened a high-powered committee to examine the grievances of around 1,600 students. The Director General of NTA, Subodh Kumar, stated that the integrity of the examination was maintained, despite social media reports suggesting a paper leak two hours after the exam commenced. The arrested individuals, originating from the Nalanda region in Bihar, allegedly obtained the solved exam paper on May 4 and distributed it the same day. Authorities have confirmed the leak’s origin. Earlier, 13 people were detained by the Economic Offences Unit for orchestrating the paper leak.
