Chiquita Secures Delay in $38.3 Million Human Rights Verdict Appeal

Chiquita Wins Trial Reprieve as It Appeals $38 Million Verdict

Chiquita Brands International has secured a temporary reprieve in its legal battle to overturn a $38.3 million wrongful death verdict, gaining crucial time as it appeals the jury’s decision. A federal judge has paused a July trial, which was expected to be a second bellwether for the case, halting proceedings indefinitely and providing Chiquita with additional leverage.

Earlier this month, Chiquita was handed a significant defeat, becoming the first U.S. company to lose a jury verdict over human rights violations. The historic outcome has sparked intense legal scrutiny and a complex appeals process, due in part to the rare issues posed by foreign law in the case.

Judge Kenneth A. Marra of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida ruled in favor of the delay on Monday, alleviating immediate pressures for a global settlement and thereby altering the dynamics between the company and the plaintiffs’ lawyers.
