When you’re a partner at a major law firm, your name seldom becomes a household term, let alone associated with a social movement. That is, unless your client is Britney Spears. Mathew Rosengart, a partner at Greenberg Traurig, broke this mold by successfully renegotiating and ultimately dissolving Spears’ long-standing conservatorship. His efforts earned him the title of 2021 Lawyer of the Year by Above the Law and recognition as a “Power Lawyer” by the Hollywood Reporter.
Over the last three years, Rosengart’s representation of Spears has not been limited to the conservatorship battle. He also played a pivotal role in negotiating her book deal for the best-selling memoir The Woman in Me and managed her prenuptial agreement and subsequent divorce proceedings. However, this phase of their professional relationship has now come to an end. In a statement to the Hollywood Reporter, Rosengart reflected on his tenure:
“It has been an honor to serve as Britney’s litigator, to work with her to achieve her goals in obtaining the court-ordered suspension of her former conservator, followed by restoring her fundamental rights and civil liberties, while continuing to protect her and more recently to extricate her from all outstanding litigation and the byzantine probate court proceedings. As I’ve always said, the credit goes to Britney.”
Rosengart’s decision to “close the chapter” on representing Spears allows him to shift focus to other clients and matters. While his work with the pop star has undoubtedly brought him significant recognition, his statement underscores his intent to move forward, leaving a well-respected legacy in the Britney Spears case.
