A Black pretrial services investigator who claimed that Ingham County Circuit Court in Michigan discriminated against her by choosing another candidate for a promotion has been denied another opportunity to pursue her case. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit determined on Thursday that the worker did not sufficiently demonstrate that she was the clearly superior candidate for the senior investigator position. Additionally, she failed to present evidence indicating that the court’s hiring practices disproportionately affected Black employees.
The investigator, Karen Taylor, had worked for the Michigan court for 13 years before retiring. In her appeal, Taylor argued that the court’s scoring practices for candidates had an adverse impact on Black employees. However, the appeals court found that the court’s reasons for selecting the other candidate were legitimate and not a pretext for discrimination.
