Queensland police shot a man outside the Kirwan Police Station on Saturday night, leading to his death shortly after. As confirmed in a statement released by Queensland Police, the 46-year-old man from Canbrook approached the station at approximately 10pm and threatened officers with a knife. Despite attempts at deescalation, police used lethal force and subsequently provided immediate first aid, but the man succumbed to his injuries.
The police disclosed in an update that investigations are ongoing, with the Kirwan Police Station currently designated as a crime scene. Authorities are reviewing body-worn camera footage and CCTV from the station to gather further details. The man’s motive and mental state are still undetermined, and he reportedly had no criminal record.
Acting Detective Superintendent Jason Brosnan emphasized the rigorous training of the police force, stating, “I can assure you that our training is of the highest standard. We don’t take a life lightly,” as reported by the ABC. This statement underscores the policy outlined in section 616 of the Police Powers and Responsibilities Act 2000, which mandates that officers must attempt to deescalate critical situations before resorting to lethal force, if practicable.
During the ongoing investigation, local police officers and the man’s family are being offered counseling. The Ethical Standards Command will conduct an independent investigation on behalf of the State Coroner with oversight from the Crime and Corruption Commission.
