Tunisia Establishes Anti-Fraud Agency to Combat Insurance Scams Amid Rising Financial Losses

The Tunisian Federation of Insurance Companies (TFIC) announced on Monday the establishment of the Agency to Combat Fraud and Scams (ALFA) in the insurance sector. This new initiative aims to address the rising issues of fraud and scams that have impacted both insurance companies and clients alike. The announcement was made through a social media post.

ALFA’s primary goal is to mitigate the financial losses incurred by insurance companies due to fraudulent activities, which have been forcing clients to pay higher premiums. Hatem Amira, the TFIC’s executive director, stated that ALFA would work closely with judicial and security systems to combat insurance fraud, ensuring proper coordination and information exchange among its members and authorities. Additionally, the agency will be responsible for scrutinizing fictitious accident files and other fraud cases, and will publish studies on the topic.

In another statement, Amira provided insights into how the complexity and number of fraud cases have escalated over the years. He highlighted that the financial losses due to insurance fraud amount to 10 percent of the total compensation value, which is over 80 million Tunisian Dinars in 2023. This problem is particularly prevalent in car insurance, where criminal networks have exacerbated the situation.

Amira expressed optimism about the establishment of the new anti-fraud agency, asserting that it significantly boosts ongoing efforts by insurance professionals to tackle one of the most pressing issues threatening national economic security. ALFA is scheduled to begin operations in 2025.
