US Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) has submitted articles of impeachment against Supreme Court Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito, citing their failure to report gifts and refusal to recuse themselves from cases involving conflicts of interest. This move comes in response to ongoing criticism from progressives and others who allege that both justices accepted vacations from wealthy individuals and neglected their duty to avoid conflicts created by their spouses’ interests.
According to Ocasio-Cortez, the Supreme Court’s inaction on this matter compelled her and her colleagues to take legislative steps. “Congress has a legal, moral, and democratic obligation to impeach,” she declared in a press release on Wednesday. The historical precedence of such actions within the judiciary is limited, with Samuel Chase being the only Supreme Court Justice impeached back in 1804.
