Florida Supreme Court Disbars Judge Mirabal for Repeated Campaign Finance Violations

Florida’s highest court has disbarred Miami-Dade County Judge Miguel Fernando Mirabal for repeated violations related to campaign finance reporting. In a unanimous decision, the Florida Supreme Court found that Mirabal engaged in a “deliberate pattern of dishonesty” by routinely certifying false campaign finance reports. Despite Mirabal’s argument for leniency, the justices affirmed that his conduct warranted disbarment.

This decision follows oral arguments in February, during which Mirabal’s attorney characterized the disbarment as a “career death sentence” and advocated for a multi-year suspension instead. The violations spanned from 2018 until Mirabal’s resignation in 2021.

The court’s ruling outlines a series of missteps by Mirabal, including threats, omissions, and inflated cash reporting. These elements demonstrated a significant breach of ethical standards, leading to the ultimate decision to disbar Mirabal. For further details, the full decision is accessible on Bloomberg Law here.
