UK Rights Groups Urge Labour Government to Cease Arms Sales to Israel Amid Accusations of Atrocity Crimes in Gaza

In a joint letter, leading UK rights organizations have urged the new Labour government to cease the United Kingdom’s complicity in what they describe as Israel’s ongoing atrocity crimes against Palestinians. Addressed to Prime Minister Keir Starmer, the Foreign Secretary, and the Secretary of State for Business and Trade, the letter demands an immediate halt to the UK’s arms sales to Israel, emphasizing the need to prioritize international law and human rights. As noted in their statement, the organizations insist that the UK must “end its complicity with Israel’s war crimes.”

Significant legal groups, including the Global Legal Action Network (GLAN) and Al-Haq, are at the forefront of this plea. These organizations have a history of challenging the outgoing government’s decisions in the High Court and are now pressing the Labour government to break from past policies and comply with international legal norms.

The joint letter paints a grim picture of the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, referring to the current conditions as “hell on earth.” With over 38,000 Palestinian deaths and nearly 88,000 injuries recorded, the situation constitutes a grave violation of human rights and, as the organizations argue, can be classified as genocide. They assert that continuing to supply arms to Israel contravenes both moral imperatives and legal obligations under international law.

This appeal follows Prime Minister Starmer’s proclamation that the “sunlight of hope was shining once again,” highlighting an opportunity for meaningful change after 14 years of Conservative leadership. Seizing this critical moment, the rights organizations contend that the new Labour government can restore the UK’s international standing by halting its support for Israel’s military actions in Gaza. This sentiment is reinforced by reports from Northern Gaza depicting widespread bombing and nearly complete destruction of civilian infrastructure, with the World Health Organization warning of severe illness, famine, and death affecting everyone in Gaza.

Moreover, this call to action coincides with an ongoing case in which the said groups filed a legal challenge in December 2023, urging the UK High Court to stop granting licenses for weapons exports to Israel. Further, the High Court has recently granted Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, and Oxfam permission to join this legal case, with proceedings expected to take place in October 2024.
