Volkswagen Wins Patent Infringement Case, Accusing Firm Sanctioned for Misconduct

Tensions in patent litigation involving Volkswagen Group of America Inc., a subsidiary of Volkswagen AG, have escalated, as the accuser, VDPP LLC, now faces sanctions for misconduct. A lawsuit filed by VDPP alleged that Volkswagen had unlawfully integrated patented camera-related technology into its vehicle’s surround-view monitoring systems. However, the US District Court for the Southern District of Texas ruled in favor of Volkswagen, dismissing the case and awarding attorneys’ fees to the automaker.

Judge Lee H. Rosenthal stated that VDPP and its counsel, William P. Ramey III of Ramey LLP, displayed abusive litigation practices and are “severally liable” for Volkswagen’s legal expenses. The court identified multiple errors in the claims and legal theories presented by VDPP, coupled with insufficient factual investigation by Ramey LLP. According to the judge, the persistence of VDPP to maintain its flawed legal positions further contributed to the severity of the misconduct.
