The United Nations mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has called for the immediate release of journalist Ahmed Al-Sennusi, who was detained arbitrarily in Tripoli last Saturday. UNSMIL has also urged Libyan authorities to take measures to safeguard all journalists and media professionals, underscoring the vital role that a free press plays in the country’s democratic transition.
In a statement, UNSMIL emphasized that creating a climate of fear by stifling journalistic activity dramatically undermines the environment necessary for Libya’s democratic progression. “A thriving civic space, where Libyans can engage in open and safe debate and dialogue exercising their right to freedom of expression is essential,” the statement read.
Al-Sennusi, who serves as the chief editor of the newspaper “Sada” and hosts the TV program “Flusna” on Al-Wasat TV, was apprehended following his disclosure of documents that alleged corruption within the Ministry of Economy and Trade of the interim Government of National Unity and its minister, Mohamed Al-Hwaij. He was reportedly detained by armed security forces upon his return from Tunisia, and his family has since lost contact with him.
Prior to his arrest, Al-Sennusi had cautioned the Internal Security Agency Head, Lutfi Al-Harari, about the repercussions of intimidating and arresting journalists associated with “Sada”.
Libya’s independent media, which started flourishing after the 2011 uprising that led to the ousting of Muammar Gaddafi, still faces challenging conditions due to political instability and the influence of militias. The transitional Government of National Unity, led by Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh, has been grappling with maintaining order and forming a cohesive government. Al-Sennusi’s arrest highlights the risks journalists take while operating in such an environment.
Echoing similar concerns, Joost Klarenbeek, Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to Libya, stated, “Safety and rights of journalists must be protected, and any acts of arbitrary detention, enforced disappearances, or mistreatment must be thoroughly investigated.”
The Committee to Protect Journalists has also demanded Al-Sennusi’s safe and immediate release, criticizing the opacity surrounding his arrest and current location.
