Despite aspirations to optimize office space utilization, Am Law 100 firms have found it challenging to cut down on their real estate footprints, as legacy office layouts and underutilized spaces continue to pose problems. A recent report by property advisors at Savills highlights the difficulties these firms face in achieving their desired square footage per attorney ratios. As Thomas Fulcher, chair of the legal tenant practice group at Savills, notes, “As much as people are trying to skinny-down their offices, getting rid of workrooms, getting rid of administrative stations, the experience of relative inefficiency is still happening.” However, Savills’ trends bear a hopeful tone, suggesting that newer leases and office floorplans in the legal field are increasingly oriented towards efficiency.
