In a legal landscape that often prizes billable hours over work-life balance, Clean Energy Counsel (CEC) is charting a different course. The burgeoning boutique firm has adopted a unique strategy aimed at preventing associate burnout by offering manageable workloads paired with substantial bonuses. Partners at CEC have embraced this philosophy, emphasizing that sustainability is paramount for both the firm and its employees.
As Brad DeJean, a partner at the firm, explained in comments to Bloomberg Law, “We are working in a sustainable industry and we want our firm to last as well. One of the ways to do that is just to really make sure that your people have a workload that they can manage without getting burned out.” This approach is underscored by a reduced billable hour requirement. Associates at CEC have a billable target of 1,200 hours annually, significantly lower than the workloads typically expected in Biglaw firms.
In addition to manageable hours, CEC offers a generous bonus structure. According to partner Zach Crowley, associates receive bonuses for every hour billed beyond the 1,200-hour target, alongside origination credit for new business. While starting salaries may be lower compared to Biglaw counterparts, these additional financial incentives allow associates to potentially match or even surpass Biglaw earnings.
