Tunisian Opposition Leader Lotfi Mraihi Sentenced to Prison and Lifetime Election Ban Amidst Concerns Over Judicial Independence

The Court of First Instance of Tunisia on Friday sentenced opposition leader Lotfi Mraihi to eight months in prison and imposed a lifetime ban on contesting elections. Mraihi, the founder and president of the Union Populaire Républicaine (Republican Union Party), faced charges of illicitly influencing votes through the distribution of gifts and cash, as reported by local media. Alongside the prison term, Mraihi was ordered to pay a fine of 2,000 Tunisian Dinars (approximately $650).

Mraihi’s conviction came after the public prosecutor’s office launched an investigation on July 1 this year, with an arrest warrant issued on July 5 for money laundering and unauthorized financial transactions abroad. These allegations surfaced following Mraihi’s announcement of his intention to run for the upcoming presidential elections, having also been a candidate in the 2019 elections.

The case has raised concerns about judicial independence in Tunisia under current President Kais Saied, who is accused of interfering with judicial proceedings to stifle opposition ahead of his bid for a second term. Previous moves by Saied, such as the dissolution of Tunisia’s High Judicial Council in 2022, have drawn criticism and reports from organizations like Amnesty International which highlighted the erosion of judicial independence in the country.
