A recent incident has led to the departure of a prominent partner from the newly merged Allen & Overy Shearman & Sterling firm. According to a report by RollOnFriday, the London-based partner was apprehended by police for driving under the influence in New Forest, England, with a blood alcohol level three times above the legal limit.
The partner, who remains unnamed, was driving a Porsche Cayenne at the time of the incident. Following his arrest, he pleaded guilty to the charge of “drink-driving.” As a result, he received a £1,000 fine and had his driver’s license suspended.
In a statement, a spokesperson for Allen & Overy Shearman & Sterling emphasized that the firm takes such matters very seriously. “The partner in question has accepted responsibility for this personal matter and has elected to resign from the firm. We wish him the best going forward,” the spokesperson said. The partner’s departure is not immediate, as the firm is currently in the process of transferring his responsibilities to other team members.
This incident acts as a stark reminder of the severe consequences that can arise from driving under the influence, not only legally but also professionally. For a field as demanding and scrutinized as Biglaw, the impact is undeniably significant.
