Litera Acquires FileTrail to Enhance Governance, Risk, and Compliance Offerings

The legal technology company Litera has announced its acquisition of FileTrail, a well-known provider of information governance and records management software. This move aims to enhance Litera’s governance, risk, and compliance (GRC) capabilities, which already include products such as CAM, PowerDesktop, and PS/Ship.

By incorporating FileTrail, Litera aims to deliver more comprehensive solutions for managing regulatory obligations and data security risks across both physical and digital records. Litera CEO Sheryl Hoskins emphasized that this acquisition would enable clients to maintain better oversight of client and matter data, thereby improving compliance with evolving regulations. “FileTrail’s strength lies in its ability to offer a unified view of all data within an organization, and this integration into Litera’s existing GRC portfolio will provide firms and corporate departments with enhanced governance, risk, and compliance capabilities,” Hoskins stated.

FileTrail’s customer base includes prominent law firms like Jackson Lewis and Clifford Chance, corporations such as CBS and RE/MAX, and financial services companies including AIG and Wells Fargo. Following this acquisition, Litera plans to offer expanded capabilities such as:

  • Comprehensive data management
  • Integrated digital collaboration management across systems (e.g., document management, Microsoft Teams, SharePoint)
  • Unified retention and compliance management
  • Streamlined review and approval workflows
  • Improved management of partner and attorney client-matter transfers
  • Better management of outside storage vendors

Harold Westervelt, CEO of FileTrail, expressed enthusiasm about the acquisition, highlighting that it would bring their products to a larger audience. “The combination of FileTrail’s capabilities, alongside Litera’s CAM, PowerDesktop, and PS/Ship products, creates a governance solution that allows our customers to have complete control over sensitive client data,” Westervelt noted.
