In a landmark decision, survivors of the USS Cole bombing have been awarded $2 billion in damages from Iran. This judgment comes as an effort to hold Iran accountable for its sponsorship of the 2000 terrorist attack on the USS Cole, which resulted in the deaths of 17 American sailors and injured 39 others. “This decision justly holds Iran to account for its sponsorship of this infamous act of terrorism and the grave suffering it caused,” said Gibson Dunn partner Matthew D. McGill. McGill further emphasized that while they do not expect Iran to comply voluntarily with the judgment, they will pursue Iran’s assets globally within the bounds of the law.
